Every building communicates, and all the visions for the future are manifestations of current ideals and believes…
Step into a vision of London to experience one of those megalomaniacal plans which was never realised.
In Unbuilt London, Lucas Dekker uses point cloud scanning and virtual reality to reconstruct a city shaped by unrealised ideas. Drawing on the speculative architectural visions collected in London as it might have been by Felix Barker and Ralph Hyde, this installation invites visitors to experience London not as it is, but as it was once imagined.
For this work, Lucas Dekker travelled to London, scanning and capturing fragments with 3D scanning, audio recording and photographs of the city. These form the basis of a visually minimal environment—deliberately sparse to engage the viewer’s imagination. The installation extends beyond the visual through sounds recorded and the sound design by Manuel de Ruijter and a guiding narration voiced by Richard Strange, who appears as The Architect.
The experience unfolds across three scenes. As a visitor you move through these virtual spaces, the conversation reveals the ideologies, power structures, and personal ambitions embedded in the design. Architecture here is not treated as static form, but as narrative—a projection of belief, control, and utopian thinking.
Reflecting contemporary architectural practices that use VR to test spatial ideas, Unbuilt London instead uses the same tools to interrogate the past and its unrealised futures. In doing so, the work explores how the built environment is shaped as much by what is left out as by what is constructed.
